serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command:’Love your neighbour as yourself’.” Galatians 5:13b-14

This Sunday we talked about Chief Clunis. Chief Clunis leads over 2,000 police officers, it is his responsibility to keep all of us safe. We looked at two things the Chief has been heard to say regarding his work.

“I’m here to serve the community, what do you need?”

“We’re trying to build a strong sense of community within the entire city, with people recognizing that we all need to care about each other. If we’re going to change what we see in our city, it’s going to take a concerted effort from everyone.”

Questions

1 – Chief Clunis is a leader, but he tells us that he is here to serve us. Do you know anyone else who was both leader and servant?

Read John 13:12-17

2 – Do you need anything? Does someone serve you? Who?

3 – Are there people in our city who have needs, but no one caring for them?

Read John 13:34-35

4 – One person cannot care for everyone. But, we can all help someone. How can you serve? At home? At school? At church? In your community?

Activity

Take some time this week to think of a way you and your family can serve a neighbour. Remember, just like Chief Clunis, we are to follow Jesus’ example.

Don’t forget to practice your memory verse

“You are the children that God dearly loves. So follow His example. Lead a life of love, just as Christ did.” Ephesians 5:1-2a

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

This Sunday we talked about gifts (or talents). We saw that God gives each of us different gifts. And, it does not matter which gift we have been given because all gifts are important, all gifts meet a need and all gifts are from God. Rather, what’s important is that we share that gift with others. Just as C.S. Lewis did. C.S. Lewis was creative. He had a way with words. He was able to reach many people with his writings.

Her are some C.S. Lewis quotes to get you thinking.

  • “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen:not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
  • “To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.”
  •  “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching”
  • “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less”
  • “I never exactly made a book. It’s rather like taking a dictation. I was given things to say”

Questions

1 – Which is your favourite quote from those given above? Why?

Read 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

2 – Who gives us gifts?

3 – What gift do you think God’s given you?

4 – Which is the most important gift?

Read 1 Peter 4:10

5 – Are you sharing your gift with others, just as C.S. Lewis did? What are you doing?

Pray together, thanking God for the gifts He’s given you and pray that He will show you how to use your gift to serve others.

“Suppose a brother or a sister has no clothes or food. Suppose one of you says to them, ‘Go. I hope everything turns out fine for you. Keep warm. Eat well.’ And suppose you do nothing about what they really need. Then what good have you done?”
James 2:15-16

This Sunday we talked about Charles Mulli and read a story about him and his family called “The Biggest Family in the World”.

family

Many kids thought that Charles Mulli and his family were from a long time ago, but they’re not! They’re alive and living today. Take a look at this video to see all the amazing things God is doing in Kenya with Mully Children’s Family.

We talked about generosity in Kidventure and how Charles and his wife Esther were generous. Can you think of some ways they show generosity to others?

Do you think it was always easy for them to be generous and trust that God would take care of them? What happened when they ran out of food one time? Do you remember? What happened when the new land God gave them ran out of water? How did God take care of them? (answers are at the bottom)

This series is all about following Jesus and trying to be more like him, can you think of some ways that Charles Mulli is becoming more like Jesus? What are some things that you can learn from Charles that teach you to be more like Jesus?

Read James 2:15-16. If Charles had seen the street children and saw that they needed help but did nothing to help them would he have been obeying God? We need to love and pray for others but we need to share and be generous as well.

Watch and listen to this great song about giving:

I like this song because it’s almost exactly what Charles Mulli said to God when he didn’t know what to do with his life, “God, I turn everything over to you, what do you want to do with me?” I also like how the song tells us that giving and being generous isn’t only about giving money. What else does the song say you can you give?

Pray together, thanking God for all the good things we have and that God will give you a heart that is generous and wants to share with others.

(When Charles and Esther ran out of food to feed their family, they prayed and God sent a woman with a truckload of food for them. And when their new land didn’t have enough water for them Charles prayed long and hard and God showed them where to dig a hole. After digging for two days they struck fresh, clean water. Enough for everyone and all their gardens and crops!)

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4

This Sunday we talked about Pope Francis. Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic church, he is responsible for 1.2 billion people. Many have said that Pope Francis is HUMBLE because he chooses to wear simple clothes, drive a small car and live in an apartment when gold robes, limos and castles are offered. But, more than this, Pope Francis cares for people. He helps the poor and the sick. He wants justice and honesty. He follows Jesus.

Questions

1 – What does the word humble mean?

2 – Do you know anyone who is humble? What does he/she do that stands out as being humble?

Read Matthew 23: 1-12

3 – In this passage Jesus is talking about the Pharisees and the teachers of the law. Today, we don’t have Pharisees or teachers of the law, but we do have priests and pastors. What were the Pharisees doing? (verse 4-7) Did Jesus think this was right? (verse 3) How does Jesus want them, and us, to act? (verse 12)

Read Philippians 2:1-11

4 – This passage reminds us that Jesus was humble. And, that we are all called to be like Him. Therefore, we are to be HUMBLE: “value others above ourselves”. What can you do to show humility, be humble?

Activity

Sit with your family and make a list of encouraging words. Now think of someone you know that might need a little encouraging today. Make them a gift package and be sure to include some of those encouraging words.

the BIG plan

“For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

We had a great time in Kidventure this week. We made an amazing tapestry telling the story of Easter, and all the special touches you guys put on it was fantastic.

I hope you’re enjoying your spring break. I’ll keep things simple this week and simply post a video that tells the Easter story. It’s a great reminder of what God’s BIG plan was and why it’s such good  news for us. But I will ask one question… how does it make you feel to know God loves you like crazy and sent Jesus to save you?
