ABOUT

WHO WE ARE

Good News Fellowship (affectionately known as GNF) was established in 1986 as a church plant of the Christian Reformed Church of North America, seeking to spread the Gospel of Christ to the community of St. Vital in the south end of Winnipeg. We have always been a little experimental and unconventional in our approach to ministry – we like to push the edges of how things are ‘usually’ done in order to be edifying representatives of Christ to each other and to our community.

Our building at 891 St Mary’s Road is located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation.

Like most urban churches, our membership has grown and shrunk and grown and shrunk again over the course of our life. We currently have 50+ adults (and almost as many kids!) attending our Sunday services and weekly ministries. We are proud to be and to have been a stopping-off / resting / healing place for many people who have come through our doors and gone out again to serve God in a variety of interesting ways.

How We Lead

We are lay-led (read: not having a full-time pastor) in an effort to honour how the Holy Spirit has called us into more intentional collaboration, communion and active participation with God and with each other. This means we are a church who believes there is a leader in every chair and we are blessed our members have seen fit to contribute their skills, abilities and gifts in a variety of ways at GNF and in their non-Sunday lives. We have some of the most amazing musicians, number-crunchers, event planners, cooks, bakers, handy-people, speakers and pray-ers in Winnipeg, in our humble opinions. We love when people are doing the things God has called them to do and we intend to continue to make space for more people (like you?) to do just that!

We do have a Leadership Coordinator, Krista dela Rosa, who looks after making sure all our ministries are running to their full potential and keeps us all on track and in the loop as to what’s going on where. We also have a Church Life Coordinator, Cathie Chapman, who attends to administrative details like putting out our Weekly News bulletin and also helps people connect with people – if you’re new, she’ll make sure you’re warmly welcomed and introduced to some of our regulars.

What We Run

We offer a weekly Sunday morning service where we invite a variety of voices, both lay and professional, to help deepen our faith journeys. We also regularly rotate through a variety of styles of worship, including liturgical services, traditional lecture-style, sharing of testimonials, and group discussions.

We also offer a variety of ways to connect in smaller groups, with something for every age. Check them out below:

Small Groups  – Usually run during the week, these groups focused on things like the Truth and Reconciliation Report, prayer and spiritual gifts, contemplative Bible studies, board games and potlucks. If there is an excuse to eat together, we will find it and we will make it happen!

Kidventure – On Sunday mornings, for kids (ages 3 to Grade 6). Lovingly run by the same group of volunteers for over 20 years, we are continually in awe of their energy, enthusiasm and creativity in serving our kids. If you are looking for a Christian community dedicated to loving your kids and teaching them about faith, we can’t recommend Kidventure enough!

Genesis – A small group for teens and pre-teens that meets on Sunday mornings and alternates between having small group bible studies and participating in the life of the church – doing everything from learning the sound board, to helping out in the nursery, to setting up chairs before the service.

Community Connection – As a church, we use our skills and our space to host community outreach when we can. One of the regular groups you’ll find at our church is called Community Venture (LINK). As part of the Salvation Army, Community Venture is a not for profit agency that uses our space during the week. They provide developmental day programming, residential, transportation, outreach, and respite services to adults living with intellectual disabilities.

Journey With Us

COVID Plan – All in-person ministries are suspended for the time being. Please be invited to join us via Zoom each Sunday morning at 10:30AM. CLICK HERE to contact us to request a Zoom link.

For persons using our building, we have ensured increased cleaning and sanitization measures are in placed. As per the Government of Manitoba public health regulations, mask wearing indoors is mandatory and social distancing is encouraged whenever possible.

Regular Plan – As soon as we are able, we would love for you to join us in person as we journey through life and faith together! When Manitoba slowly eases its restrictions, we will gradually begin to meet together, adhering to all the safety measures recommended by our province to ensure each other’s health.

When we have a clear date for reopening in-person Sunday services, you’ll find that information here.
